The Ripple Effect of Wellness

At Pneuma Lab, we believe that workplace wellbeing isn’t just about perks. It’s about creating a culture where people feel alive, connected, and empowered to show up as their best selves.

The science supports this approach. Happiness, according to author and Harvard professor Arthur C. Brooks, is the sum of Enjoyment, Satisfaction, and Meaning. And in Why Workplace Wellness Matters, Professor Jan-Emmanuel De Neve identifies four key indicators of employee wellbeing: Happiness, Stress, Purpose, and Satisfaction. These are shaped by what he calls our foundational needs, social needs, and growth needs.

From this research, two powerful truths emerge: when employees feel a genuine sense of belonging and regularly feel energized, they are much more likely to thrive. These are not just nice concepts. They are essential experiences that directly impact wellbeing, especially in hospitality where human connection is central to the guest experience.

So, how do we turn insight into action?
At Pneuma Lab, we use the 7 Dimensions of Wellness, a framework created by the National Wellness Institute, to help teams take meaningful steps toward a healthier work culture. This model offers a practical and holistic way to assess and improve wellbeing in the workplace. You can apply it whether you're creating a company-wide initiative or simply want to enhance your own day-to-day experience.

Choose one or more of the ideas below and try it this month. Small actions can create powerful ripple effects, both in your energy and in how others feel around you.

1. Environmental Wellness
Creating surroundings that support your health, safety, and productivity.

  • Place a potted plant on your desk.

  • Reduce clutter to create a calming environment.

  • Use an essential oil spray or roll-on to engage your most powerful sensory organ.

2. Physical Wellness
Caring for your body through movement, rest, and nutrition.

  • Try a quick seated stretch routine to do mid-afternoon.

  • Stock up on healthy snacks at your desk.

3. Emotional Wellness
Understanding and managing emotions, building resilience, and reducing stress.

  • Take 5 minutes at the start of your workday to set your intention for the day. Our Cosmic Waitress workshop is a great way to learn more about the power of positive mindset through intention setting.

  • Normalize “mental health days” and flexible time off.

4. Social Wellness
Building meaningful relationships and a sense of connection.

  • Host a weekly walk and talk. (Pneuma Lab offers a free early morning hike every Wednesday at Red Rock Canyon.)

  • Do a micro-action that will create a positive emotion in a colleague.

5. Intellectual Wellness
Stimulating creativity and learning through new experiences.

  • Read a book and share your thoughts on your workplace intranet.

  • Rotate who runs the weekly team meeting.

6. Spiritual Wellness
Connecting to purpose, values, or moments of reflection.

  • End your week with gratitude for all that you have accomplished.

  • Review your company’s mission statement and see how the values align with your personal values.

7. Occupational Wellness
Finding purpose and balance in your work.

  • Check in daily on your happiness levels. Less than a 7? Find or create a group to share concerns about burnout.

  • Find micro-moments to add a spark of joy in your workday.
