The Wild Side of Wellness

I’m not particularly athletic, sporty, or outdoorsy. You’re more likely to meet me at a cocktail party in wedges and a pretty dress. Athleta summed me up perfectly in their 2020 campaign, The Soft Soul: “Totally in touch with her soft side, she loves to explore the rustic beauty of the natural world. Taking time for herself means getting away to the perfect natural setting to relax and recharge…” It’s intuitive for me to understand the benefits of being in nature. Just last year, I spent 6 glorious days quietly hiking up Mt. Kilimanjaro, talking to the flowers and rolling clouds. For those of you who might not feel the same, here are some interesting facts about the benefits of nature. And if you think it's odd to hear this from someone living in Las Vegas, think again. Balancing the wild party side of Vegas with some ecotherapy makes perfect sense once you read about the benefits.

First, let me introduce a passion project of mine, Wildlife Soulful Adventures. Born during the pandemic, it’s more than a brand; it’s a journey with a commitment to connecting individuals with nature. It offers transformative adventures that go beyond ordinary hikes, nourishing the soul and awakening the spirit.

At the heart of Wildlife Soulful Adventures is the belief that true wellness comes from a deep connection with nature and oneself. This philosophy aligns seamlessly with Pneuma Lab’s mission to create environments where individuals can thrive both personally and professionally.

Understanding Ecotherapy

Ecotherapy, also known as nature therapy or green therapy, is a therapeutic practice that involves engaging with nature to improve mental and physical well-being. I’m sure you already incorporate one or two of these in your life without even realizing it!

Types of Ecotherapy

  • Horticultural Therapy: Gardening and plant-based activities to relax and reduce stress.

  • Green Exercise: Walking, running, or cycling in natural settings.

  • Animal-Assisted Therapy: Interacting with animals like horseback riding or spending time with therapy dogs.

  • Adventure Therapy: Challenging outdoor activities such as hiking, rock climbing, or kayaking.

  • Wilderness Therapy: Immersive experiences in remote environments for personal growth and self-discovery.

  • Forest Bathing (Shinrin-yoku): A Japanese practice of immersing oneself in a forest to enhance well-being through mindful engagement.

Benefits of Ecotherapy

  1. Mental Health Improvement: Ecotherapy can reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. It promotes relaxation and enhances mood by decreasing cortisol levels and increasing serotonin production.

  2. Enhanced Physical Health: Physical activities in nature improve cardiovascular health, reduce blood pressure, and enhance overall fitness.

  3. Cognitive Benefits: Being in nature can improve attention, concentration, and cognitive function. It helps in mental restoration and reduces mental fatigue.

  4. Social Benefits: Group-based ecotherapy activities foster social connections and a sense of community, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness.

  5. Connection to Nature: Ecotherapy helps individuals develop a deeper appreciation and connection to the natural world, fostering environmental stewardship and sustainability.

Wrapping It Up

Incorporating nature into your life doesn't mean you have to ditch the cocktail dresses and Las Vegas’s amazing nightlife. It’s all about finding that perfect balance. Next time you're tempted to hop on a treadmill, consider trading it for a scenic hike or a fun outdoor activity instead. Trust me, the fresh air and natural beauty are worth it! Whether it’s kayaking on Lake Mead, playing with your pets, taking a ‘desert’ bath, or a weekend away in Zion National Park, there are so many ways to enjoy the great outdoors. So, slip on those stylish sneakers and join me on a soulful adventure. Let’s embrace the wild side of wellness and see just how refreshing nature can be.

Cheers to a fun, nature-filled Summer!
